Earth Babies: The story you haven't heard
Earth Babies was started by Megan and Michael Hughes with Michael's
sister Heather.
A year before we actually decided to start our business Michael
was working as an investment broker. He likes people and money,
but the door knocking and cold calling gave a new definition to
the word brutal and depressed. According to Michael things were
so bleak that Heather began sending him a postcard everyday with
an absurd fact just to invoke half a smile.
Michael's wife Megan is a nanny by day, an interior designer by
education, and has more style than Michael and Heather combined.
Yes, she does her best to bring them along. Megan started making
baby blankets for her girlfriends (the ones with kids, naturally)
and toyed with doing a blanket business.
Heather was a stay at home mom with a 2 year old and another on
the way. She was going stir crazy creating to do lists for her to
do lists. You can imagine why her husband encouraged her to get
out a little more. Getting the mail is not an outing.
The three of them finally decided to give the business a go. Michael
said adios to his investment job, Megan pulled out her sewing machine,
and Heather's daughter started preschool--All seemingly unrelated
events but not to conspiracy theorists.
Megan, the possessor of product creativity, Michael, with his charm,
and Heather, being one of those nutty folks that likes to track
miles and write business plans, were a great combination.
The original motivation for making these products is summed up
by the following: Why does a mom have to wear Winnie the Pooh on
her diaper bag? Is her baby eventually going to carry it? (Wouldn't
that be a perk.) They make products that meet the needs of infants
and toddlers while giving moms and dads the opportunity to look
like they are: (pick one) an adult, in the current decade, or a
separate entity from her children.
The trio also put a lot of thought into their carbon foot print
and how we could reduce that
shoe size. They are classic Seattleites,
concerned with that wacky global warming. That
coupled with a pet peeve about poor customer service (why is it
no one lists their
phone number or mailing address on their web site?) the team knew
their mission and chose to accept it.
They continue to go more "green" and give a personality
and humor to their business
efforts. More of the story after we go
to commercial.
